Tad roused from a light slumber. His leg tingled from the cold, hanging from the edge of the bed. From across the room an intermittent beep sounded. Tad rolled, drew his leg in to the warmth and exhaled. As he woke, the recognition of an incoming call from the laptop registered. “What?” He wandered to the desk, rubbing his eyes. After tapping the keyboard, Billy appeared on screen.

“Billy, you know what time it is? It’s…” he paused. “I don’t even know what time it is.”

“Tad my man, I gotta tell you! Cops just came tearing down my street, sirens going, lights flashing! Man, they moved faster than my granddad with the shits!”

Tad yawned. “Billy. Really? You woke me up at…” he looked in the lower right hand of the screen. “Three twenty four! You woke me up at three twenty four! And for cop cars passing by your place?”

“Let me finish. My old man just came in from work, said he passed them on the road. He said they headed out to the farm. To the crash site.”

Billy caught his attention. “What are they doing out there?”

“I don’t know, but I’m going to find out. You coming?”

Tad sighed. “Bill. Did you even learn anything from last night?” Billy, ever the adventurer. He’d probably grow up to be the real life Indiana Jones.

“Yeah. I learned there’s still stuff going on up there! You in?”

“Look, I’m in deep with my parent over this already. They even find out I’ve been talking to you now and I’ll probably get grounded until our prom. Can’t you wait until tomorrow? After school like we planned?”

“Hell no! It’s all gonna be over by then. You want some other douche to steal our fame?”

“Is this what it’s all been about?” Tad’s eyes rolled. “You want to be famous?”

“Not just that. I don’t want anyone to go steal our hard work.”

The chair creaked as Tad leant back. “What about Jake? What did he say?”

“Jake had the sense not to answer me.”

“Well, I’m answering, and I’m saying no. nothing personal, Billy-boy, I’m sticking to the plan. At least I have a reason for being late home tomorrow. Mom knows I sometimes stay behind and help feed the fish in the science labs.”

Truth was, he really wanted to go. He wanted to know everything that was happening out there in the woods. If caught by his parents, though, he’d be screwed for eternity. He was playing a poker face. If Billy knew he expressed even one percent in his being to head out at this hour, Billy would convince him somehow.

After a brief pause Billy shrugged. “Alright, I’ll go see what’s happening for myself. No hard feelings, huh?”

“No, of course not. Meet me in the food hall tomorrow before class. Tell me what you find.”

“No problem, Tad.” Billy smiled. “May the force be with you.”

“And you.”

The call ended. Tad grasped the screen and flipped it down. He shuffled in to the bathroom, took a piss and went back to bed without washing his hands.
